ADHA-conformant e-prescribing in production Brisbane · Australia-wide

Custom healthcare software development for Australian providers

Booking platforms, appointment and CRM software, patient portals and clinical tools - built around how your practice or health business actually runs, not how an off-the-shelf product assumes it does. With deep AI integrations where they earn their place, and the medical integrations most agencies won't touch.

See how we built Canary

Pixel is a healthcare software development company based in Brisbane, working with providers across Australia. We build custom booking and appointment platforms, healthcare CRM software, patient portals and AI features, and we integrate them with national health infrastructure - including production conformance with the Australian Digital Health Agency for Canary's e-prescribing platform.

Why custom

When Off-the-Shelf Health Software Stops Fitting

Practice software and booking tools are built for the average clinic. If your model isn't average - multiple locations, a new care pathway, a digital health product, or a service nobody has packaged yet - you end up running the business around the software's gaps.

01

Your booking flow doesn't fit a generic widget

Multi-practitioner, multi-site, telehealth plus in-person, intake forms that change by service, deposits, packages, referrals required before booking - the standard tools handle one or two of these, not all of them.

02

Patient data lives in five different systems

Bookings in one tool, notes in the practice management system, marketing in a CRM, payments somewhere else - and staff copying between them by hand.

03

The integration you need isn't on anyone's roadmap

E-prescribing, the Healthcare Identifiers Service, pathology results, secure messaging - vendors either don't offer it or charge enterprise prices for a partial version.

04

You're building a health product, not running a clinic

A digital health startup or a new service line needs its own platform, and the conformance and privacy work has to be designed in from day one, not bolted on before launch.

05

Admin time is eating clinical time

Reminders, reschedules, recalls, intake triage, referral letters - repetitive work that software, and increasingly AI, can take off your front desk.

Healthcare software development services

Four kinds of work, usually combined in the same platform. Every build is scoped as a fixed price before anything is written.

Custom booking platforms

Online booking built for your services, practitioners and locations - not a widget you have to work around.

Multi-practitioner and multi-site scheduling

Telehealth and in-person in one flow

Intake forms, consent and referrals captured before the appointment

Deposits, packages, cancellation fees and waitlists

Appointment and healthcare CRM software

One place for the patient relationship, from first enquiry to recall, connected to the systems you already run.

Patient records, history and communication in one view

Automated reminders, recalls and follow-ups by SMS and email

Referrer and partner management

Reporting on utilisation, no-shows and revenue by practitioner

Deep AI integrations

AI that does real work inside the platform, with the checks and audit trail health data needs.

Intake and enquiry triage, summarised for the clinician

Assistants that book, reschedule and answer questions against your rules

Drafting referral letters, summaries and patient communication for review

No-show prediction and smarter schedule fill

Deep medical integrations

The integrations that need conformance, certificates and a lot of reading - the part we've already done in production.

Case study

Canary: e-prescribing, approved by the ADHA

A pharmacy platform with government-approved production access to Australia’s national e-prescription network.

Patients receive a script token from their doctor, enter it into Canary, and their chosen pharmacy dispenses it against the national prescription record. We built the patient app, the pharmacy dashboard, and the integration layer between them and the national prescription exchange - FHIR R4, signed payloads, and the audit requirements that come with production access.

Getting there took two to three months of Australian Digital Health Agency review: security, clinical governance and conformance testing. Eight months after launch we turned the platform into white-label SaaS, so other pharmacies can run their own branded instance on Canary's conformance instead of earning it themselves.

AI in healthcare software

AI That Does the Work, Inside Clinical Guardrails

We already run an AI assistant in production that creates, cancels and refunds orders for Nourish'd - checked against business rules before anything happens. Healthcare gets the same approach, with tighter limits on what the model is allowed to decide.

The clinician stays the decision-maker

AI drafts, summarises, sorts and suggests. Anything clinical is reviewed by a person before it reaches a patient or a record.

Actions go through your rules, not the model's judgement

When an assistant books or reschedules, it calls the same validated actions your staff use - availability, eligibility and cancellation policy are enforced by the platform.

Every AI action is logged

What was asked, what the model returned, and what the system did with it - so you can audit it, and so can anyone reviewing your practice.

Patient data handled deliberately

We choose models and hosting based on where the data is allowed to go, strip identifiers where the task doesn't need them, and keep health information out of prompts that don't require it.

We flag regulatory lines early

Software that diagnoses or recommends treatment can fall under TGA medical device rules. Admin automation usually doesn't. We tell you where a feature sits before it's built, and when you need specialist regulatory advice.

Built for health data from the first commit

Health information is sensitive information under the Privacy Act. The platform is designed around that from discovery, not patched before launch.

Australian hosting

Patient data stored and processed in Australian regions, with the infrastructure documented so you can answer where your data lives.

Privacy Act and APPs

Collection, consent, access and retention designed against the Australian Privacy Principles, including patient requests to access or correct their records.

Role-based access

Practitioners, reception, admins and patients each see only what their role needs, enforced on the server rather than hidden in the interface.

Audit trails

Who viewed or changed a record, and when. Built in, because conformance reviews and incident response both depend on it.

Encryption and secrets handling

Encryption in transit and at rest, with certificates and keys for government and clinical integrations stored and rotated properly.

Conformance experience

We've been through ADHA review for Canary, so we know what the evidence looks like and design for it from the start.

How a Healthcare Build Runs

Integrations and compliance shape the timeline more than screens do, so we map them first.

01

Discovery and integration map

Your workflows, the systems you need to connect to, and which of them need registration, certificates or conformance testing.

02

Fixed-price scope

A written proposal with scope, timeline and cost, signed off before development starts.

03

Build and conformance

Development in short cycles you can see, with integration testing and any conformance evidence prepared alongside.

04

Launch and support

Go-live with your team, then ongoing support and new features from the same engineers.

Who this is for

Multi-site clinics and allied health groups that have outgrown their booking tool

Digital health startups building a patient-facing product

Pharmacies, pathology and diagnostic services connecting to national infrastructure

Health businesses that want AI doing real admin work, not a chatbot on the homepage

Providers launching a new service model that off-the-shelf software doesn't support

Who this isn't for

A single-practitioner clinic that an off-the-shelf booking tool already serves well

A brochure website for a practice - see our web design service instead

Projects that need to skip privacy and security work to hit a date

How much does custom healthcare software development cost?

chevron-down

Focused platforms typically start from $30,000, with larger builds - multi-site booking, patient portals, CRM and integrations together - ranging from $60,000 to $200,000+.

The biggest cost drivers in healthcare are usually the integrations and compliance work rather than the screens. Anything that needs conformance testing, certificates or registration with a government or clinical system adds time, and we map those first so the fixed-price proposal reflects them.

Do you build custom booking and appointment systems for clinics?

chevron-down

Yes. We build booking and appointment platforms for multi-practitioner and multi-site providers, including telehealth, intake forms, consent, deposits, packages, waitlists and automated reminders.

If a single clinic is well served by an off-the-shelf booking tool, we'll tell you that. Custom makes sense when your services, locations or patient journey don't fit what those tools assume.

Can you build healthcare CRM software?

chevron-down

Yes. A healthcare CRM brings the patient relationship into one place - enquiries, bookings, communication history, recalls and referrer relationships - and connects it to your booking and practice systems instead of duplicating them. We design it around the data you're allowed to use for each purpose, since health information has tighter rules under the Privacy Act than ordinary customer data.

Have you integrated with Australian national health infrastructure?

chevron-down

Yes. We built Canary, an e-prescribing platform with production conformance from the Australian Digital Health Agency. That involved a full implementation of the national electronic prescribing specification - FHIR R4, signed payloads and audit requirements - and two to three months of ADHA review before production access was granted.

Can you integrate with our practice management system?

chevron-down

Usually, but it depends on the system. Some practice management systems have open APIs, some require joining a partner program, and some only support integration through HL7 messaging or file exports. We confirm what's actually available for your system during discovery, before it goes into a fixed-price scope.

How do you add AI to healthcare software safely?

chevron-down

By keeping the clinician in charge and the model on a short leash. AI drafts, summarises and triages; a person reviews anything clinical. When an assistant takes an action like booking or rescheduling, it goes through the same validated actions staff use, so your rules are enforced by the platform rather than the model. Every AI action is logged, and we choose models and hosting based on where the patient data is allowed to go.

Will AI features need TGA approval?

chevron-down

Some might. Software that diagnoses, predicts a condition or recommends treatment for an individual patient can be regulated by the TGA as a medical device. Administrative AI - scheduling, summarising enquiries, drafting correspondence for review - generally isn't.

We flag where a feature is likely to sit before it's built. We're not regulatory advisers, so where the line is unclear we'll recommend you get specialist advice before committing to the feature.

Where is patient data stored?

chevron-down

In Australian hosting regions, encrypted in transit and at rest, with role-based access enforced on the server and audit trails of who viewed or changed a record. We design collection, consent, access and retention against the Australian Privacy Principles from discovery onwards.

How long does a healthcare software project take?

chevron-down

A focused booking or CRM platform is typically a few months. Projects with government or clinical integrations take longer, mostly because of registration, certificates and conformance review, which run on the other party's timeline. The fixed-price proposal includes a timeline that accounts for those steps.

Do you work with healthcare providers across Australia?

chevron-down

Yes. We're based in Brisbane and work with health businesses across Australia, in your timezone and during standard business hours.
