Laravel rescue for business-critical applications

If your Laravel app works but feels risky, slow, unsupported, or hard to change, Pixel can take it over, stabilise it, and get it ready for what comes next. We're a Brisbane-based team of senior Laravel engineers who've inherited messy production systems before - regulated workflows, high-volume platforms, codebases nobody documented - and know how to make them dependable again.

Start with a code audit

Pixel is a Laravel rescue agency based in Brisbane, working with businesses across Australia. We take over existing Laravel applications from freelancers, offshore teams, previous agencies, or departed internal developers - auditing the codebase first, then stabilising, upgrading, or rebuilding it depending on what the audit actually shows.

Signs it's time

When a Working Laravel App Starts Feeling Like a Liability

Most of the applications we take over aren't broken - they still run. The problem is that nobody trusts them enough to build on, and the business wants to grow while the app is what's holding it back.

01

The original developer disappeared

The freelancer went quiet, the offshore contract ended, or the internal developer left - and nobody left behind can explain how half of it works.

02

The previous agency lacks Laravel depth

Slow to respond, expensive for small changes, or clearly generalists rather than a team that lives in this framework.

03

The app breaks when you change it

A small feature request turns into a week of unrelated things quietly failing, because nothing was built to be extended safely.

04

No tests, poor documentation, fragile deployments

Every release is a manual, nervous process because nothing verifies the app still works before it goes live.

05

Slow pages, database issues, failing background jobs

Queries that scan too much, queues that silently stop processing, and pages that get slower as the data grows.

06

Running an outdated Laravel or PHP version

Security patches you're not getting, packages that no longer support your version, and a growing gap to current best practice.

07

Security concerns nobody has actually validated

No one has properly reviewed authentication, authorization, or how user input is handled - and you're not sure what you'd find if you looked.

08

Hosting and infrastructure nobody understands

Servers, environment variables, and deployment scripts configured by someone who's no longer contactable.

We start with diagnosis, not panic

A working application that feels fragile doesn't automatically need to be rebuilt. Sometimes the right answer is stabilise, refactor, upgrade, document, and support - a rebuild is expensive and risky, and we don't assume it's necessary until the audit says so.

Most of the time, it's stabilise - not rebuild

The majority of the applications we take over have a sound core - the fragility is in a handful of specific areas. Fix those properly and the app becomes something you can build on again.

achievements-card-bg

When rebuild is right, we'll say so - with evidence

Occasionally the audit shows the architecture itself is the problem. When that's the case, we'll tell you plainly why, and what a rebuild would involve - not as a default recommendation, but as a conclusion drawn from the codebase in front of us.

What's included in a Laravel rescue engagement

Every engagement starts with a Laravel code audit. From there, we scope only the work your application actually needs from the list below.

Laravel code audit

A full read of the codebase, data model, and application behaviour - what's solid, what's fragile, and what needs attention first.

Security review

Authentication, authorization, input handling, and dependency vulnerabilities checked against real attack surface, not a generic checklist.

Performance review

Slow queries, missing indexes, N+1 issues, and caching gaps identified and prioritised by actual impact.

Architecture review

Whether the application's structure can support where the business is heading, or where it will need to change first.

Dependency and Laravel version upgrades

Bringing an outdated Laravel or PHP version current, safely, without breaking what already works.

Database and query optimisation

Schema, indexing, and query performance tuned for the data volume your application actually handles.

Test coverage and CI/CD

Automated tests and a deployment pipeline, so releases stop being a manual, nervous process.

Hosting and infrastructure review

A clear-eyed look at where and how the application is deployed, and whether it's configured for the traffic it actually gets.

Bug fixing and stabilisation

Closing out the specific issues causing the application to feel unreliable day to day.

Feature development

Once the foundation is solid, we keep building - new features on an application you can now trust to change.

Documentation and handover

Written documentation of how the application actually works, for whoever needs to maintain it next.

Ongoing support retainer

Continued Laravel support after stabilisation, so the application doesn't drift back into the state we found it in.

How a Laravel Rescue Engagement Runs

Six stages, but the first two are what decide everything else - we don't scope a rescue plan before we've actually read the application.

01

Access and discovery

Repository, hosting, and environment access, plus a conversation about what's not working and why it matters to the business.

02

Codebase audit

A full technical review of architecture, security, performance, dependencies, and infrastructure - the picture the rest of the engagement is built on.

03

Risk report and rescue roadmap

A written report ranking what's genuinely risky, what can wait, and a fixed-scope plan for what happens next.

04

Stabilisation sprint

Closing out the highest-risk issues first - the fixes that stop the application from being fragile day to day.

05

Upgrade, refactor, or rebuild

Whichever the audit actually calls for - version upgrades, architectural refactoring, or in rarer cases a targeted rebuild.

06

Ongoing support and improvement

A support retainer once the application is stable, so it stays that way as it keeps changing.

Can you take over a Laravel app you didn't build?

chevron-down

Yes - this is most of what we do under this service. We start with access and discovery, then run a full code audit before touching anything, so we understand the application on its own terms rather than assuming it was built the way we'd have built it.

Every codebase has decisions that made sense given the constraints at the time. We rescue applications built by freelancers, offshore teams, previous agencies, and internal developers who've since left - the origin doesn't change our process.

Do we need to rebuild from scratch?

chevron-down

Usually not. Most of the applications we take over are stabilised, refactored, upgraded, and documented rather than rebuilt - a rebuild is expensive, risky, and often unnecessary if the underlying architecture is sound.

We only recommend a rebuild when the audit genuinely shows it's the cheaper, safer path long-term - and we'll explain exactly why, with evidence from the codebase, not a default assumption that new is better than old.

Can you work with our internal developer or team?

chevron-down

Yes. Some clients want a full handover, others want us embedded alongside an internal developer or team who need senior Laravel support they don't currently have in-house. Both work - we scope the engagement around what you actually need.

Can you audit our application before we commit to anything?

chevron-down

Yes - a code audit is the first stage of the process and can stand alone. You get a risk report and rescue roadmap covering what's solid, what's fragile, and what needs attention first, before you commit to a stabilisation sprint or any further work.

Can you upgrade an old Laravel or PHP version?

chevron-down

Yes. Version upgrades are one of the most common reasons businesses come to us - an outdated Laravel or PHP version usually means missed security patches, unsupported packages, and a growing gap between the app and current best practice. We handle the upgrade path as part of a stabilisation sprint or as standalone work.

Can you improve performance on a slow application?

chevron-down

Yes. Slow pages are usually a database, query, or queue problem rather than a "the app just needs a rebuild" problem. Our audit covers query performance, N+1 issues, caching, and job/queue health, and we fix what's actually causing the slowdown rather than guessing.

Can you help if we don't have documentation?

chevron-down

Yes - most of the applications we take over have little to no documentation. Reading the codebase, understanding the data model, and mapping how it actually behaves is standard practice for us, not a blocker. We also produce documentation as part of the handover so the next person isn't starting from zero.

Do you offer ongoing Laravel support after the rescue?

chevron-down

Yes. Most clients move onto an ongoing support retainer once the application is stabilised, rather than a one-off engagement - we'd rather be your long-term Laravel partner than hand back a fixed app with no one watching it.

Are you based in Brisbane?

chevron-down

Yes, we're a Brisbane-based team and Australia's only Premier Laravel Partner - a credential endorsed by the Laravel team directly.

Do you work with clients across Australia, not just Brisbane?

chevron-down

Yes. Being Brisbane-based means we're in your timezone and available during standard business hours - it doesn't mean we're limited to local clients. We rescue and support Laravel applications for businesses across Australia.
